John Carver was a man of great faith, who loved and served God, his family, and his country. He served in the US Army January 1961 through February 2001, retiring at the rank of Sgt. Major. He was the Training NCO of the 890th Engineer Battalion. He was a charter member of the Mississippi National Guard Non-Commissioned Officers Association, where he served terms as President, and Vice President.
John was Scout Leader of Woolmarket’s troop of Boy Scouts of America in the early 1960’s. In the mid 60’s he coached the first girls’ softball team in Woolmarket, then coached a Pony League baseball team in Gulfport. He devoted over two decades to Little League Baseball and softball during the years his daughters were growing up. He began in the 1970’s leading the growth of the program in Woolmarket and ended his volunteer time in 1997 as the District Administrator of the State of Mississippi. He was recognized with numerous awards and honors throughout his 40-year military career and his years of service to his community.
Along with his love and devotion to his family, his other great commitment in his life was demonstrating his love for God by serving in his church. At the age of 22, John was ordained to serve as a deacon in Woolmarket Baptist Church, where he continued to serve for 51 years. He was an avid supporter of Sunday School and all the various ministries of the church and was most recently involved in Kid’s Beach Club at Woolmarket Elementary, and North Woolmarket schools, and with Tim Tebow’s Night to Shine Special Needs Prom, hosted by Woolmarket Baptist Church.
His family would like to express gratitude to the doctors and nurses at Keesler Medical Center for the exceptional care and compassion they showed for John and his family.
Special thanks to our pastor, Rev. Paul Crowley, who John has respected as a pastor, and loved as a member of his family.
