I knew Billy for many years on the commuter boat from Hingham to Boston where my frequent conversations with him in the galley were the highlight of the trip and often the highlight of my day. I briefly met Helen once at the Hinckley, Allen & Snyder (law firm) summer outing, at which I was surprised to see Billy, and learned that Helen and I worked at the same firm. I always knew Billy to be kind of manner and of heart. He had more sea stories than anyone I knew, and I found these fascinating. Skipping a 150' catamaran at nearly 40 knots over the tops of 6 to 8 foot swells on his way to the Caribbean, navigating a tug and barge across the Atlantic, if my memory serves (I don't want to exaggerate his stories, because he didn't, but I may be understating the size of the swells) and countless other stories about the Gulf--I always encouraged him to recount his experiences. Billy lived a wonderfully rewarding life.
Billy has been the only Captain at the Hingham boat who absolutely faithfully stood by at the window of the bridge ready to bid each patron of his vessel good day. His manners and attention to courtesies were gentlemanly and rare in these days. I have missed saying good day to him as I leave the boat each day since his retirement.
I am very glad to have known Billy and have missed him since he retired. Please accept my condolences on the passing of your husband, father, brother, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Helen, what a beautiful video about Billy! Very sad but its also very clear he had a full and wonderful life and that you were a big part of it! He was a great man and one of a kind!
We hope you are doing OK and please know you and Billy are in our thoughts and prayers. We will never forget him, Love, David, Donna, Lauren Matteodo
Dad, all that is good in my world is because you first loved me. Through you I learned to be courageous, strong and kind to all, to never fear an adventure and to love history. I will miss our many conversations and stories. I love you and will miss you forever. You are the world's best DAD and I am a lucky woman to be your daughter.
May the Lord grant you eternal rest and peace.
Love your daughter,
Thinking of your family and the loss you have suffered. Prayers for all, he was deeply loved and will live on in our hearts and memories.
Kathy and family
Helen and Randy and Billy's family,
I am so sorry to learn of Billy's passing.
He was a real Standup Guy!
- one of those rare, genuine throwback guys, who believed in exemplifying the strong gentlemanly way of the proverbial Real Man - what John Wayne - wished - he could be.
We yanks have already have been missing him up here in New England at our family gatherings.
I am thankful for having seen his modeling for a how a man should be, and miss his 'just one of the guys' demeanor, too, even more.
I miss him.
You all can be very proud of this man.
Our sweet Uncle Billy will be so missed. His stories, his laugh, and his hugs brought such joy to everyone around him, and his loss will be deeply felt by those who knew and loved him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aunt Helen, his children, and grandchildren. We love you all.
Dear Helen, Only a true and abiding love such as yours and Billy's can create such a sorrowful feeling of emptiness...Nonetheless, your deep faith can and will sustain you during this trying time. Our fondness for Billy was as boundless as his energy and elegance. In whatever memory we muster where he was concerned, there was only joy and a delightful twinkle in his eye that could convey how happy you made him. Even though we know he is no longer suffering, we are certain his recollections of you are keeping him uplifted. Please know if there is any way we may be of service, do not hesitate to call. Love, Ann and Jon
My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours at this time.
All though my time with you was short, I hope you know what an impact it made on me and our family!!! All men and women should strive to have the qualities you possessed!!! Many prayers being lifted to the family left behind!!! Always cling to the memories!! They are such wonderful ones!!
A wonderful man who will be sadly missed. We've only known Mr. Billy for a short while but he and Mrs. Helen quickly became loved and respected by our family. Our heartfelt prayers to the family and those near and dear to him.

I am so sorry for your loss Helen, and send my thoughts and prayers to you and your family.
Billy was a class act all the way. He was a great mentor, confidant, and friend. Truly one of the finest people I have ever met. I still find myself quoting him almost every day.
