Morton Downie, of Diamondhead, departed this earth peacefully on March 30, 2015, following a year long battle with Mesothelioma, surrounded by his loving family, wife of 59 years, Teresa Downie, daughters, Vallerie Downie and Vicki Haskins, son-in-law, Charles Haskins, grandson, Tyler Haskins, who was the joy of his life, a sister, Ida Pace, and numerous other relatives and friends.
Mort worked in and around shipyards for 55 years in various capacities. He retired for the 2nd time in March 2014 at age 81 after being diagnosed with Mesothelioma. He loved his family, starting with his ""number one buddy,"" grandson Tyler, continuing to his wife, Teresa Downie, daughters, Vallerie Downie and Vicki Haskins, son-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many caring friends. Mort loved to golf, especially with his grandson. He was an active participant in his wife's Mardi Gras organization, the Krewe of Selene, including building the props for the carnival balls and creating invitations. His greatest joy was being with his grandson Tyler, especially on the golf course. He was a fun loving man who always had a smile for you. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
